Ford 1500 Steering

I am new to the forums here. I have been getting a lot of useful information here but now I'm a bit stumped. A few weeks ago I bought a 79-82 Ford 1500. I really like this little machine. I have spent the last few weeks going over it with a fine tooth comb and I'm getting ready to put it to work.

I know a fair amount about mechanics but I'm not sure on this one. I noticed some oil around the steering box. It would appear it is coming from the seal around the sector end. Part #15 from the diagram below.

Do I simply pull #16,17,29 from the diagram below and replace the seal?

When I put 134 oil back in, do I pull the #18 screw and put the oil in there? And how much oil?

I have about 4" total of play in my steering wheel. Is that ok or is that considered sloppy? Can I make a backlash adjustment to tighten that up and if so how do I do it?

Is there anything else I should look for while I'm messin with the steering?

It does not appear to be a power steering box... so you can put in 90 weight or pump it full of grease.

However 4 inches of play should be looked at. You need to check all the tie rod ends for play as well as the box. If the side shaft moves up and down or sideways in the box, while turning, your box is worn out and a new seal will not help. You then should inspect the box to see which parts are worn, can they be found, over trying to purchase a used box off another tractor.

When putting grease/oil in do I back out the screw part #18 and put it in there until full?

I will check the box. So what you are saying is that I should turn the wheel and if I can see the shaft shifting while under tension then the box or part in box is wore out? To be more detailed, there is 4" of play when the tractor is sitting still. There is absolutely no tension or shaft movement in that 4".

Best investment after the tractor is an IT Service manual covering the 1500's. It will also cover a range of similar models but spell out the models which have unique adjustments. Should tell you how to step by step do many of the things you need and includes some good pictures too. Also helps with fill capacities or levels. Sorry I myself can't give you more direct answers for your issues on that model...
