800 Ford 5 speed

Forum Members,

Today I started helping a friend start an 800 Ford five speed.
It turns over but does not fire. Removed plugs and added gas to chambers and still no fire. Will test for the key working tomorrow. Question is, does the 800 have a resistor in the ignition system and if so where is it located? It has a 6 volt electrical system and a side mount distributor. I will be checking the points Thursday. Concerning the carb, is it the same as or close to an 8N carb? Any other hints on starting this 800 will be appreciated.

It's the same deal as any older infernal
combustion engine.
Start with spark.
Check/regap/clean/replace the points.
EZ on those.
Then check for power to the coil.
Use a test light or Vom.
Once you get spark move on to fuel.
check for clean fuel, clean tank, clean
sediment bowl and clean inlet to carb.
Carb is about the same MS as an N - bigger
but just as simple.

The carb is similar in design to the the N series carbs, but the
linkage hooks up on opposite sides and the sediment bowl
connects directly to the rear of the carb with the line attached.
So although they are similar they will not interchange.

No resistor in the original 6 volt system on that tractor.

Hints? Get spark to the plugs and then pull start it.
You won't need to go far or fast, just put it in high gear
and ease out on the clutch while moving.
Key on, gas on, (don't ask) still need a good battery.
Assuming the clutch works of course.

I would also clean the plugs. There shouldn't be raw/wet
gas in the cylinders as they are then flooded.
Yes, I've done it too, but I'd clean and dry them anyway.
Brake cleaner or lacquer thinner should do.

as said.

get spark then go.

easiest way to check spark is to bypass wireing and jumper clip bat hot to coil primary.. IE hotwire....

This is how I also do it. BUT doing it this way you are bypassing the neutral safety switch so make sure the tractor is in NEUTRAL also not a bad idea to chock the wheels.

I'm not sure how jumping out the key bypasses the neutral safety switch? It only bypasses the wiring to the coil?? thumb switch is still there for the starter....

Ok, I am not using the starter button, bypassing the whole system, powering a 12 volt coil direct to 12 volt battery and jumping the starter direct from the 12 volt battery. Once it starts and runs then I'll reconnect the system and go thru to see what works and what don't. Most of the tractors I'm buying are non runners with 50/60 year old wiring that most of the time isn't worth saving.
