ignition problem! Need help

i have a ford 600 tractor that does not have any spark coming from the distributor to the #4 piston. Have replaced the points, rotor, and cap. Have an inline spark tester and all other cylinders check good. Cyl has good compression. Does this mean the distributor needs replacing? I'm very familiar with Diesel engines but have never messed with the gas burners much. Any help would be appreciated thanks

only if the number 4 lobe is worn down on the dist shaft.. other wise... bad wire, bad plug, carbon arc, worn dist shaft bearings....

dist shaft should have NO play.. grab it and try to move it sideways, the bearings in the dist should hold it tight. the points should open and close on all 4 lobes when it spins around. A volt meter on the points should show 12 volt when points are open and zero volts when the points are closed.

If no play and lobes good, and points open and close, voltage goes up and down, then your chasing cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil or compression. Bad plugs will NOT fire in high compression.

Would the distributor not send a spark even if the plug or wire was bad? I've put the inline spark tester coming off the rotor cap on all 4 cyl and all have spark except no 4. I've compression tested it and all cyl check around 120.

Many things can cause that. A simple bad cap wit ha crack in the #4 area shorted to the distributor can cause that or a short in the plug wire to ground or a shorted out plug. All would show no spark with a spark tester.

i fixed problem. Hold down screw for points was slightly stripped and when engine would turn over it would allow them to move just enough to cause problems. Thanks for the help
