Ford 600 Issue

I have a Ford 600 that was converted to 12 volt long before I got it. Starts right up and will run fine until trying to bushhog. Using a 5 ft Kingcutter. After 15-20 minutes of bushhoging tractor starts to buck and backfire. If I don't clutch it, it will stall. Generally will start right back up, but can not run the bushhog again until its been shut down for awhile. Has had new coil and points put it earlier this year.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Do your trouble shooting then parts.
#1 when it starts to do this does choking it help or hurt??
#2 if it dies check for a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap at all 4 plug wires.
#3 Pull the gas cap off and listen for air going out or coming into the tank and also look for boiling gas.
#4 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a steady flow of gas form it for a few minutes

does a little choke help it when it starts to die?

if so, first check tank vacume, next check fuel flow.

Well finally got a chance to get back out and try again. Today it ran fine. Bush hogged for a couple hours with no problems. Only thing I did different was I didn't run it full throttle. Only enough to have enough RPM to keep the bushhog running good.

Most PTO driven equipment are designed to run best when the PTO speed is 540 rpm. That includes most rotary mowers (bush hogs). There was originally some sort of indicator on your tractor that told you what engine rpm would give you the 540 rpm at the PTO. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that on a 600 series tractor the engine speed should be somewhere around 1600 to 1800 rpm for proper PTO rpm. With that being said, I don't think running at full throttle under a load should cause the symptoms you describe, but I wouldn't run it at full throttle anyway.

Thanx for the tip on RPM. Yeah the tractor has a proofmeter (tach) but it doesn't work. That's on the list of things to replace along with the rest of the gages.

OK so today I tried some more bush hogging. Acted up again but not until an hour or so after I started. Choking helped some, kept it from dying out, but still could not put a load on. Checked the fuel tank, there was a definite gurgling sound. when I opened it and shined a flashlight in, could see a steady stream of bubbles coming up from where the cut off valve is mounted to bottom of tank.
