NAPA Ignition Parts For 801/901 Series Fords

I haven't been on this board for a long time, so this may have been discussed before.
I went to NAPA today to get an ignition condenser for my 961, but the only way to purchase one seems to be to buy a "kit" with the points, condenser, rotor, [u:4fd7b00687]cap and plugs[/u:4fd7b00687], not in stock and had to be ordered from warehouse - $26.99 I think.

I ended up driving an extra 20 or so miles to get a 'kit' of points, condenser and rotor for $12.99 from Tractor Supply.

It hasn't been too many years ago that these parts were available individually over the counter as I did it that way before.

So has NAPA really decided to maximize income by selling only a bloated "kit" or what? Kinda disgusted here.

You always could get the individual parts, Echlin from the napa warehouse I've done business with for 30 years, maybe its recently changed? Did they look it up under Ag ? The book they worked from at this warehouse always showed individual parts. I was really surprised initially, what I could get for a hundred series at Napa. I've used Echlin on many other things, was always a good brand.

Echlin performs well, but I am wary of any low grade or bargain ignition parts like these, both fit and performance. One dust cap would just not fit, put the old on back on and its been there since, and one rotor just shattered, left me in the field 3/4 of the way to the other end of the place, one quick walk back to the spare parts stash, and back, its been in there ever since, 10 years maybe ?

I don't like chinese parts either, but that seems to be the only way other than the New Holland dealer, which is even further away.

I don't know for sure if he was looking under 'ag' or what, since my vision is blurry with a cataract, but I watched him look up "ford 901 tractor" and got to the ignition parts section and when he clicked on the individual selection for the points or condenser, they said 'invalid request' or something. The only way he could get a response was for the whole bloated kit of parts.
This was all on the 'puter. I don't think anyone knows how to use a book any more.

Maybe they have changed the way they do things, but I don't like it.

Last summer I installed one of those "igntion kits" with cheap chinese made components in my 841. It ran fine for a few weeks, then started running badly and since it had brand new points I started looking at everything else that wasn't the problem. After days of not being able to fix it, I put the old Echlin points back in and it is still running great a year later. I will never use any chinese made crap ignition components again.

I suspect you walked in with no part numbers, thus not knowing what you wanted, then asked the pimply faced boy at the counter for a part for a 50 year old ford tractor, and lacking any real experience he hunted and pecked till he found something.

That's why when you walk into a parts store, you are time ahead to have part numbers.

souNdguy,

Thanks for posting that list. I will save it for future use.

Question, though, the parts you mention are Standard Ignition and Blue Streak. The ones I bought previously from NAPA were Echlin parts. Has NAPA changed their source, or am I missing something??

Myron
