where can I get parts?

I, too, have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower. I get incidental replacement parts (sickle knives, stone guards, pitman bars, etc) at Tractor Supply
Company retail stores. Anything else is available through my local New Holland dealer.

Parts are more expensive at the dealer, but I can always get what a need within a reasonable period of time.

I also have a 501 mower and when I need parts I just type in ford 501 parts and a number of suppliers are listed such as Webb's sickle service hope this helps. This is also my first posting here as I just registered today but have been reading this forum for a number of years.

Try Webs sickle service The prices are reasonable but shipping is high so try to order everything at once.

As the other posters said, aftermarket from places like TSC and other catalog and web sources most reasonable, but some rock guards are definitely inferior.

My experience is that many parts, other than the standard replaceables like sections, rock guards, pitmans, etc, are obsolete and no longer available. Example - I broke the outer shoe casting to which grass board attaches. Local Ford/NH dealer said obsolete, but he had a source, for a bit over $600 plus shipping.

I bought an entire "parts" 501 with 3 new sets of knives for $200. In much better shape and much better than mine, plus it is a long pitman version - problem was that the pin on the flywheel for mounting the pitman was loose. Picked up a 3rd last week advertised on CraigsList - $75, newer than either of the other two, short pitman only missing one of the clamps to attach stabilizer to 3pt hitch arm.

thanks guys. I am gonna order a parts book off fleabay and then at least i'll know what I need.

price was free on this one. it needs some of the pitman parts.

plus the nut that holds the pitman on.

They made so many of these, I always found parts mowers cheap, as many people didn't know what they were, or had no need for them. I quit cursing them and went to a disc mower years ago. Only keep a couple around to remind me of the good old days, clearing bar, backing up,replacing pitmans, oh what fun!
