601 3point lift issue

Friends 601 3 point won't lift unless he pulls up the lift lever and holds the position/draft control half way down at the same time. Any idea what
to look at first?

yup.. adjustments and likely cam pin replacement.

go ahead and buy the 14$ lift cover kit, get a pin and pop the top.

check out the cam surface to see if it is too worn. many times they wear a witness mark due to pin length being a hair short, and you can weld back up with an easy rod like 6013 then file down using the existing unworn part as a guide.

Don't worry, it sometimes happens, no one here gets too bent about the little stuff.. We just like to fix tractors.
