640 PTO Shaft

My PTO shaft would disengage periodically under heavy load while brush hogging. As advised by folks here I parked the nose in a ditch and pulled the shaft. The inside split ring(s) and bearing looked good. However, there is about 1/4" of in/out play. Closer inspection showed me that on the other side (outside rear) of the housing, the sleeve had somehow rammed itself onto the spline causing the free play in the shaft. No idea how this happened since it's been that way ever since I've owned the tractor. Any thoughts on how this happens? Did the inside diameter of the sleeve wear somehow, causing it to slide rearward onto the spline? Will a drift pin be enough to knock it loose so that I can replace it? Thanks in advance for help! could have been poorly set by prev owner, snatched during a damage event a nd partially repaired.. etc. we will never know.

at this point you just need to nudge it back into position.

set a block of wood on the ground near your work bench.

stand the pto inner end on the wood to protect splines.

last the pto shaft to your bench so you don't have to hold it.

now you can hold a maul in one hand and a driving tool in the other and drive the sleeve into place with small incremental taps / blows.

a piece of pipe of the correct diameter is the best but i have set them using a piece of heavy angle iron, just laying it on the shaft with 2 edges on the sleeve, tapping, then rotating the metal around so you are hitting a different area each tap.

if your email can handle a 6 mb file, i have a pdf showing how to R&R a pto shaft, bearing, seal , and the sleeve. It was an article i wrote and it ran in the N-News vol 25, #3 2010 issue.

For the article I have a pto shaft for a 00/01 series needing the works, and I snapped pics as I went, showing how to chase out the split rings, etc. I'll email it to ya.. there is a pic showing me driving on a sleeve with angle iron. :)
