Ford 6600 PTO

My Ford 6600 is used for cutting and baling hay. I was cutting yesterday and took a five minute break and when I got back in the tractor, the PTO did not want to engage. It finally did, but it seemed balky. Once engaged, it worked perfectly. Is this an adjustment problem in the lever or could it be a sign of something more serious? This is important to me right at the moment because I've got 15 acres of hay to bale in a day or two!

I'm going to say it's the sign of something more serious, as there is no adjustment of the operating lever. Does the tractor have Dual Power? If so, was it in high range when you had the PTO trouble? Next time try shifting to low and see if that makes a difference. If it does, you have excessive leakage in your Dual Power direct drive clutch. Keep it in low until you fix the problem.

If you don't have Dual Power, and/or it makes no difference what range you're in, then you likely have excessive internal leakage in the PTO circuit itself. Cross your fingers that you can get your hay done before you have to go into it.

also check for low pressure on low side of pump... You might.... get lucky and a pump change will fix it. Make sure fluid levels are up and not low also. I have dodged the bullet on a couple of tractors by renewing the pump and pressures then tested normal and pto was back to as expect. I dont know how long this fix lasted as I did not keep the tractors past the end of the season. All the tractors I buy get used for chores including haying till sold.

I use Dual Power ALL the time cutting and baling. Very handy.

One thing - once the PTO is engaged, it works fine whether I use Lo or Hi on the DP. The only problem is when the machine is hot and I've shut down briefly (like for a call of nature). When I go to re-engage...and I'm at idle power when I do...is when it just sits there and won't turn. I'll check it the next time to make sure it is in Low.

I just bought this machine this summer from the original owner who never used the PTO. He was a drawbar guy until he retired and leased out his acreage. It's a wonderful tractor and I could not be more pleased but this PTO thing is peculiar. I'm hoping it is just quirky from lack of use.

Thanks, by the way, for responding. If my comments above give you any other thoughts, please share. Meanwhile, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for sure.

Hot idle is when problems resulting from internal leaks are most likely to show up. That would explain why it appears to function normally once you're up and running.

As a "get by" measure, trying revving up the engine next time it won't engage. If it takes off then, it's a sure sign of an internal leak that is excessive - somewhere.

I can assure you that your PTO problems are not caused by "lack of use". Sorry about that.
