850 Rear rim - central PA

I have a rusted rear rim on my 1956 Ford 850 and need a replacement. I don't know the name of this type of rim and am having trouble finding another one like it. The only power adust rim I can find is the z bar spin out type, but not like mine.

The tire is 13.6 x 28 and until I get it off the rim I won't know the rim size, but I am guessing 12 x 28.

Can anyone help me with a source for a new rim, or the name of the rim, or why I am having trouble finding a replacement (new or used)?

Thank you in advance.

You have the Ford specific power adjust rims used only by Ford until the patents expired on the less expensive rail type power adjust rim that became the industry standard.

Such Ford power adjust rims have not been available from any supplier for decades.

Your options are:

1. Find a good welder that can repair your rim.

2. Find a good used Ford power adjust rim. They are available but are not inexpensive and shipping can be a deal killer.

3. Replace your Ford power adjust rims with the ubiquitous 6 loop rims. This will require replacement of the wheel centers but such centers are readily available in salvage yards.

One other option (not recommended) is replacement of both rims and centers with 8 lug rail type power adjust rims and centers from a MF tractor of similar vintage, e.g., 35 or 135.

Thanks Dean,

I was afraid that my rim would be obsolete. It was really neat spinning it off the wheel center like a threaded top.

I will have to pursue option #3 and find a new wheel center and use the 6 loop rim. Can you give me any pointers on what to look for in wheel centers? My 850 has 8 lugs, so is this unique to 800 series or could I get a center from an 8N, for example.

Thank you,

Howard

You can buy a bare rim on weld the track off of yours to it. Reliable aftermarket parts has bare wheels and shipping for one wheel is about $35.

bolt pattern is the same from 8N up to and thru your 850.
The early centers were a solid circle, later ones had a scalloped
edge to make changing width easier. Either will work. some MF too.
Take your tape measure when looking at used ones if you aren't used to it.
There is a larger pattern 8-lug 6 hoop center out there too (International) that obviously won't work.
While spin-outs are nice, I usually do what you do, if one is shot, sell the good one or pair and get enough money from them to buy a couple hoop wheels....and centers...and tires....lol

Thanks for the information. I was thinking the same thing about selling my centers and rim to cover the cost of a new setup.

You seem to be implying that that the original power adjust rims and centers are worth some money. Do you have any idea how much money I should be considering? I don't want to give them away, but I also need to get new wheels and get the tractor back to work.

Thank again.

I went through the same scenario you are in. Here is how I see it. Option 1 is Fix them yourself by welding and grinding smooth. Would need to see better pictures. My rims were horrible but I got some curved sheet metal parts, welded them up. JB weld and paint. Looks good and still holding up. Only 1 year so far. Option 2 Buy a blank rim, grind off the brackets and weld onto new rim. Finding used is very difficult and new ones are spendy.

(quoted from post at 12:49:30 07/18/15) Got to thinking seen a rim that has 4 tabs that bolts for track. Hey Wheel makes it.

Those work great, bought one for my tractor to replace the rusted power adjust rim and it fitted perfectly. Even came with the proper bolts to bolt it to your wheel center.

As Dean said, Ford power adjust.
I have a spare pair of them with the centers in pretty good shape.
I'm in central lower Michigan.

I have a pair on my 960 as well. One of those was rusted
around the valve stem. I repaired it myself about 3 years ago.
The only major labor was draining the CaCl and dismounting
the tire. Biggest cost was the new tube.
