Problem diagnosis...??

I've got an 861. I've noticed that after extended periods of use... (couple hours maybe?) that when I shut the engine down, it wants to keep firing... kind of half chugging, even though the key is off. It'll do that until sort of let up on the clutch a bit to give it some resistance.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Either timing is too advanced or idle is too fast when you shut it off. Remote possibility someone has waaaaaay too hot spark plugs installed could contribute as well. All this presumes the coolant is at a normal/reasonable temp

That is what is called dieseling and is cause by hot spots in the engine due o carbon etc. What happens is when you turn it off as the engine tries to spin down it is still sucking fuel into the cylinders and the hot spots then fire the gas so it sort of keeps running. Way to help stop that is idle it down and let it idle a couple minutes before you shut it off. Also if it is carbon build up try mixing a qt of ATF into 305 gal of gas and that will help clean up carbon

Set the idle to the specified 450 RPM and idle the engine for a couple of minutes before shut down.

Unless you have other problems, it will not run on upon turning off the ignition.

That should read 3-5 gal or gas to 1qt of ATF. Fat finger problem and hit the 0 instead of the -

What haven't you ever had a case of the fat finger and all. Look at the key board and you should notice the 0 is next to the - so I hit one key over.

Hey Duck my 861 does the exact same thing. Carb is set right, idle and timing set right but it still diesels when I shut the key off. I haven't tried the atf in the gas yet, maybe I will do that when it stops raining and I can cut hay with it.
