12V conversion

I have purchased a 12v conversion kit along with new 12v coil and 12v electronic ignition kit to remove the points in my 1960 ford 641. In the conversion kit there is a resistor that is wired in series between the key switch and the positive side of the coil. If I have changed the coil from a 6v coil to a 12v coil does that resistor still need to be in line between the coil and key switch? Has anyone had a similar question answered or come accross this themselves?

If the coil says "12 volts no external resistor required" you do not use the resistor. If it says "12 volts use with external resistor" yes resistor required. If I were changing to electronic ignition I would want the one with no external resistor.

If it were mine I would do the 12 volt conversion with new coil first and get it running with the points before changing to electronic ignition. If you do both at same time and encounter problems it may be more difficult to determine which new changes are causing the problem. Points will work with either 6 or 12 volt system.

ome 12v coils need a resistor, some don't. Measure coil resistance across the two small terminals. If around 1.6 Ohms, you need the resistor, but if around 3+ Ohms, you do not need resistor.

Thanks Gents, Unfortunately the box that the coil came in somehow has gone missing and there is no way for me to tell if the coil is use with or without external resistor. I will perform the resistance check and roll from there. I do thank you for the advice!

Most coils right on them will be some writing say external resister need or no resister needed unless it is a real old one that you had laying around. If you just got it call the place you got it form they should have that info
