Powermaster decal

1956ford

Working on a 1957 960. I was told that mid-year the 960's came with the
"Powermaster" decal on the hood. Would like to verify if this is true. If so
can someone tell me the approximate serial number this started? Mine is serial
number 124607 so I assume it is early to mid year mfg. I see no evidence of it
ever being there, but can see traces of the one piece "Model 960" painted over
on the dogleg.

Yes, the last 1957 year models of the 960 and 860 used the Powermaster decal on the side of the hood. But I doubt very much if the exact serial number brake can be found, since, according to those that were around, a fire at Ford destroyed lots of records

I don't have an exact answer for you but some hints. I have an original ad for a 960 Powermaster, seemingly introductory, dated April 6, 1957 and the Powermaster decal was there. I also have a very late model Ford 840 serial number 144875 and the Powermaster decal was definitely there when I scraped down to the original paint. My guess is that if you scraped down to the original paint and didn't see any evidence of it then it was not presnt when the tractor left the factory.

No one has the answer as to when Powermaster first appeared. However I can say that my 960 that we purchased new had them and it is #114,399.

Ford Motor as all auto companies were required by the US to keep records 7 and some as long as 14years. Just imagine how much paper accumulated in that time. They had to eliminate it as it was mountainous therefore they were eager to dump them. The fire mentioned was the Rotunda fire, some records were stored in the basement and did get destroyed. That quantity would be just a drop in the overall bucket of FMC records.

Thanks for the info guys. I have not gone down to the base coat yet.
but cannot feel any decal though the paint. Total restoration will
commence next year, so I will find out then.

Good luck with the investigation, when I discovered mine (many years ago) by gently scraping the paint and uncovering one letter at a time it wasn't exactly like a decal - was more or less even with the uncovered original paint. Perhaps the factory process wasn't a decal but some type of paint/masking process? I don't know, just throwing that out. Anyway in the Ford 4 Cylinder Tractor Parts List 1953/64 published April, 1982 (AKA parts manual), Decal section it lists Part Number 310029 (no longer serviced) as "POWERMASTER, 800, 900", and the applicable year as 57/ meaning 1957 model only. Please let us know what you find.
