Q for SOS PTO Gurus

IN my recent 881D project that seems nearly complete I seem to have hit a roadblock on the PTO. Here are some of my background/symptoms. It's been a while but I think the pto shaft did work to some degree before I started the rebuild. When the pto knob was pushed in it would slow the pto shaft but it would not stop the shaft from rotating. I've never had a PTO driven implement on this tractor. I did take the tranny cover off the tranny during the rebuild to adjust the Park Safety Switch. I never removed the pto shaft cable. I have followed the SOS Manual procedure to thread the cable counterclockwise into the tranny cover that does give me the typical knob movement of about 1 1/4 ". When slowly pushing the cable in the shaft still rotates at normal speed.

When I move my 500 to 1000 pto speed lever to the neutral position the pto shaft seems to rotate at the old "off" speed. I should also let you know that I have never been able to move the Ground Speed Lever to the Ground Speed position.

Let me know if you need more info to help diagnose. Fortunately I don't need this repaired quickly but I sure like things to work the way they were designed to. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rick

Rick,

I'm not sure what you are asking, and I am by no means an expert, but I did just go thru some PTO issues with my 871

1- how could you remove the top cover without removing the PTO cable? the cable goes thru the cover, and if you cable was adjusted properly, based on what I see on my tractor, it would be very difficult to leave the PTO cable in place and work under the cover.

2- with the PTO lever off, can you stop the PTO with your foot or a 4x4? the PTO shaft will never stop spinning, but rather just freewheel spin when not engaged. with my 871 sitting there idling, PTO in the off position, as long as I commit to it I can reach down and grab the PTO with my hand and stop it.

when pushing my PTO lever from ON to OFF it appears as if my PTO is spinning under power until right at the last second when I hit "off"

I cant comment on the functions related to 2 speed PTO, since I don't have that!

I did look at my photos of the cover removal and I do see that I removed the cable as you suspected. When I turned the cable counterclockwise it does seem to thread appropriately into the cable retainer. I do seem to remember that I could stop the shaft rotation with my foot before the rebuild but I think I need to try that today when both in Neutral and the 500 rpm setting. My hunch is that I may be able to stop it in Neutral but not in the 500 rpm setting.

Conditions have to be just perfect for the PTO to stop on an SOS, meaning most of the time, they won't. As stated, any kind of a load on the shaft will usually cause them to stop, but a bare shaft will almost always rotate. I've also had success by setting up the bearings for the clutch pack to the top of the preload spec during a rebuild.

To engage the ground drive the 540/1000 lever must be in neutral. Mine isn't lined up exactly right so neutral is not perfectly in the center hole on the lever arm. Try wiggling the 540/1000 lever back and forth in/near neutral while trying to engage the ground drive lever. To stop the pto shaft, use block of wood only- if engagement cable is not adjusted correctly it will be under power.
