Removing distributor 3000

I am going to pick up a tractor I purchased. I need to get it running as it will need to be to load on a trailer. Winch is not an option as it will need to weave through some stuff. Was told it would run but has not run in a while. I have spare parts and am intending to switch out the carb so I don't need to rebuild it and am wondering if it would be easier to have a loaded spare distributor and just switch it. I know on the 4 cylinders the hex rod falls into the oil pan. Is it a bad idea? Would it just be easier to put points in the old one?
Second. Would a 4000 percent carb work on the 3000 engine? Will it run right?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jason.
I would just clean the points and call it good. Or bring a new set along.
Either bring a VOM and check power to the coil or bring a jumper wire to hook from the battery to the coil.
I have a small fuel tank from a lawn mower that I would gravity feed to the carb.
With fresh fuel, clean points, good battery and power to the coil an old tractor will almost always start and run "one more time"

That's why I love spellcheck on my email. Wish I had it here too because I always have to go back and correct. Good luck with your new (to you) tractor.
