Pie weights

Preparing the icing for on top of the cake for my 641 restoration. Pie weights.

Spent the day cleaning/prepping and painting those things. I'm here to say that whoever said that painting a set of pie weights is a big job was right on. And lugging those turkeys around is not a fun deal, either.

Hope to get them on this week. Tractor's heading to Pennsylvania for a show on Friday. Will be the first time out of the garage since finished. Glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

It was me.

Properly preping, priming and painting a set of pie weights is an enormous job.

I've done it with wire bushes/wheels (never again) and with a sandblaster, itself a big job unless one has an industrial blaster.

I've done it by hanging the parts, which takes a large area and a great deal of 10 AWG fence wire, and I've done on cardboard like you did. I prefer the cardboard method but one must wait a couple of days before turning the segments over to paint the other side.

In my opinion, properly sandblasting, priming and painting a set of pie weights doubles the value.

Yours look great.

Thanks Dean.

I've gotta agree with everything you just said. I ended up with a combination of sandblasting and wire wheels. It's a bear of a job for sure. I'm exhausted. Not leaving the Lazy-Boy until bedtime.....and likely will pass out before then.

I'm with you also on the value. It would take a TON of cash for me to part with this set now. And I mean crazy money. That all said, I have no intentions of ever doing another set.

I have two sets. One looked good when I got them, the other needs paint. I have been trying for 6-8 years to figure out the logistics of turning and all that so I haven't gotten to them yet.

Great job. I'm guessing that your 641 isn't sporting a set of PA rims since those are the heavy weights. They
always look so good cleaned up and painted but i never seem to get around to it. IMO they are the best
alternative to loaded tires and for an old guy like me 30 or 40 lbs on and off are easier to handle. Where is the
show in Pa? is it a ford feature?

When I had to paint a dozen or so to complete a set on a tractor,
I was lazy, so I dipped them in a bucket of paint and hung them up to dry.

I agree, Kirk.

Though R & R ing a set of pie weights a bit time consuming, it can be done by one man without a helper.

It's much easier than trying to muscle around 100 lb.+ weights of other designs.

Kirk,

No, my machine has standard wheels on it. And yes, these are the heavier ones. If I had a choice, I'd go for a set of the lighter ones, but the deal on this set was too good to pass up.

The show is in Alum Bank, PA, and is put on by the Alum Bank Community Fire Company. Bedford County. It's a super nice show that starts Thursday night with a big parade, then Friday night a huge cruise-in with a couple hundred cars and a burn out contest. Tractors roll in on Friday night also. Saturday is the actual show, with a full car show to go with the tractors. Usually almost 300 cars, and maybe 200 tractors. They have a tractor parade Saturday afternoon where an announcer talks about each machine as it rolls by.....pretty neat. Then truc and tractor pulls also on Saturday night. Tons of food, games, etc. All in all, this thing has grown to be bigger than the county fair and is a huge event for the area. Just good clean fun.

This is about as much as I'll do to ever put my stuff on display. My youngest son has been wearing me out about taking it there, so I will this time. Usually just go as a spectator.
