I own a Ford 4000 3 cycl gas. ran fantastic this morning like a fine tuned watch. I had used it to roll the hay I cut yesterday. This afternoon I went to roll it a final time before I baled. The thing now runs rough and at low idle it quits,, the exhaust is black with alot of soot accumulating on the swingarm. I checked the butterfly on the choke it is open. i just can't figure out what happened. I did put more gas in it after using it this morning but that should be good. Kwik Trip has a high turnover rate for its fuel so that should be good. Any ideas?????

If the choke is fully open and the air cleaner is not restricted, you will need to disassemble the carburetor to inspect.

Or is plastic and not water logged and sank, but fuel logged and sank.

Drop the bowl and with the fuel shutoff open where gas is running out of the carb, take your finger and push up on the far end of the float (from the needle valve end) and when parallel to the mounting plate of the bowl to the main casting ensure it shuts off the fuel flowing. If so ok on that. If not needle may have gotten plugged with debris and can't close.

If that's ok pull the float out and set it in a container of gas. What happens? If it sinks or partially submerges, you have your smoking gun.

tap side of carb with a wrench hard to knock float loose. Its stuck.

sometimes a bit of crud will get into the float valve and stick it open... Sometimes stick it shut or plug it. Goo in the bowl will make the float stick down especially if you run it dry.. tapping side of bowl will usually fix it unless its a stuck in the valve, then a disassemble and cleaning will be needed. See it in about everything using external_link gas.... best way to stop it is to turn off gas at tank and let carb run dry everytime you stop the tractor for the day. The dry carb will not goop up as bad as letting it set full of gas to evaporate out and leave the goo and varnish behind.. Especially all winter!!!!

Always, always check your spark First.
Verify that you have a bright bluish-white spark that will jump at least 5/16"
Only then go on to fuel/air.

as the others said. check air cleaner.. an easy test is to just slip the pipe off and see if it changes suddenly.

lastly.... you didn't add some diesel or kerosene to the gas tank when you topepd it off. seen that before. :)

For pete's sake,it's not nessary to tear the carb down to check and see if the problem lies with the float. Turn fuel off at trank and start the engine. If it stops smoking and runs smooth before dieing there is a float problem. If you want to try and avoid treaning down to fix,try this. Pull carb drain plug, turn fuel on at tank and catch a quart or so of fuel then put plug back and start engine to see how it runs. Doing so will often flush debris from between needle and seat.

This model has a mechanical fuel pump.
By the time you cranked it long enough to pump a quart your battery would be dead.
I would still check the spark.
First.
