The original subject was "Re: What does the light on the dash mean?".

I'm having almost the same problem with the light staying on. I've already replaced both generator and volt reg. But now when running the light gets even brighter. What would cause this?

our referenced post seems to be indeterminate as to whether the generator charge light or a SOS transmission warning light is in question. Which is it?

then light in question for me is the generator charge light, I've replaced the generator and the voltage regulator and now when running the light is brighter than ever. The brightest I've ever seen it.

he light is connected across the cut out contacts (BATT, ARM). When open, lamp can see a voltage difference between the generator armature & the battery voltage. When the contacts close (normally when engine up to speed & gen & VR both functioning properly), the closed contacts effectively short across the lamp, resulting in zero voltage & no light. So, if lit & all wired properly, then gen/VR not functioning properly.

If you have installed a new generator, you will need to polarize it one time to put a magnetic charge on the field coils. There are two ways to do this pending on which tractor model you have. Do a search for polarize and pick the one for YOUR tractor.

,,,,,,or just momentarily short BATT to ARM, whether yours is "A" or "B"......it works.

P.S. that will also give you a bit of a check on you gen lamp wiring, as it should go dark during the shorting of BATT to ARM.

So, if the light gets brighter as the rpm's increase. Which one would that mean is not working right. When at low rpms very dim light, high rpms very bright light.

ike I indicated earlier, it likely means that BATT to ARM contacts inside VR are not closing, but generator is working. Temporarily short BATT to ARM & see if charging begins & lamp goes dark, as I said before.

I'm game for anything. When you say batt to arm . Where do I short at exactly. I'm good at following
directions, and have a long jumper. Also if the jumper is at VR do I leave the wires attached?and do I have the tractor running or not?

I went to youtube and followed the directions for
my VR. While the short was on place light goes
out, but still does the same thing as before. From
this would you deduce that the VR, even though
new, is NOT working correctly.

f you mean that it does same as before when you remove the jumper, then answer is yes, VR likely bad.

(quoted from post at 21:41:18 06/27/15) Thank-you so much for detailing things for me, and for your help
ou are more than welcome. Sad to say, but it seems that so many VRs sold today are no good. Might try burnishing the contacts.
