First time poster so go easy on me. According to the serial number, I have a 1955 ford 850 tractor. Last winter the hydraulics quit working altogether. cold weather always made it very slow but it never stopped working. Now that it has warmed up here in Michigan I started the tractor and the lift arms and the loader will both work but it shudders when I lift or lower them. I need to put this thing back to work, where do I start diagnosing this problem. Any help would be much appreciated. The manual lists 17 "special tools" to rebuild this system. Do really need all that stuff?

First place to start if checking fluid levels and also color. You say it stopped working when it was cold as in below freezing?? If yes good chance it has water in the fluid and that will cause all sorts of problems like your having

Along with what Old said:

Let the tractor sit for awhile, couple of days or so. The center section has the hyd fluid so look under it for a drain plug and slowly remove it with a catch pan. If you have water in your fluid it will be the first out as oil floats. If so, drain and refill with regular hydraulic oil, don't need the fancy combination that today's tractors use (tranny, diff, hyd, wet brake, steering) which costs more.

After you get her refilled run the tractor at PTO rpm and with a load on the 3 pt. raise and lower a dozen times or so to bleed the air if it takes that and the shuddering should stop. If that doesn't cure it, bleed your hyd. pump. NH (Ford) dealers carry service manuals usually so get one and it will tell you how to do that. Cost around $30.

If you don't know when the hydraulic oil was last changed, I would go ahead, drain it, and then refill with UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid). Run the tractor and see if things improve.

I you still have the jitters or the lift does not work, then bleed the pump. Post back if you need to do that, it is not difficult.

Ditto what old and the others said. Might be water in the oil or old grease thick oil someone hasn't serviced in 20ys.

This one is in the done pile. I flushed the system and all is good. I didn't find any water in the system but after cycling the three point and the loader several times it finally got rid of the shudder. I think it works better now than in the previous 5 years that I have owned it. thanks to all the people who took the time to reply, it sure helped me out of a tough situation.
