i just bought a 800 the steering is sloppy it seems you need to turn steering wheel a lot lot before front wheels start to turn.
where do i start to look to fix this

As larry is leading, you need to find out where the play is, before you start fixing it.

As mentioned, thrust bearing play will be seen as the steering wheel spinning out or screwing down into the column a biut before wheels move, usually harder in one direction too.

other area are backlash betweent he sectors, meaning one settering arm move before the other, IE, forward double sector moves arm first before rear sector does.

next, you have to look at all 4 tie rod / drag link ends. a worn out end about ready to drop out the ball will look like lots of play.

Next, the bearings and front hubs. lastly, the spindle bushings, though those don't usually show up as slop, but rather hard steering.

using the I&T fo-20 manual, the box is VERY easy to take apart, rebearing and seal, etc.

I reccomend a thin 0 or 00 grease in the box after you rebuild it. Ford put out a service bulletin in 1962 to adress the greas in box issue.

i can move steering wheel about 1/2 to 3/4 up and down it will move about 1/4 to 1/3 left or right before wheels start to move

(quoted from post at 21:44:01 06/22/15) i can move steering wheel about 1/2 to 3/4 up and down it will move about 1/4 to 1/3 left or right before wheels start to move

I'm assuming 1/2 to 3/4 up and down is inches and 1/4 to 1/3 is turns of the wheel??????

If these assumptions are correct, it is time to R & R your steering unit. There are two rounded taper roller bearings on the steering shaft, one on the bottom and one at the convergence of the steering tube and the sector box. The lower one is especially prone to failure if the tractor sits out in the elements and water intrusion happens or if the steering gear gets devoid of lubricant.

i'm bad you are right it is inches and turns of steering wheel.
i ordered a service manual from yt i hope it will walk me thru fixing this.
from what i learn this tractor hasn't been used for 10 + years i bought this tractor on an estate auction.
