best way to time 640

So I decided to covert my 640 to EI Mainly I just want the first hand experience as to if its any good or not. We've got 5 tractors, all had points, and with the constant debate on EI that comes up here, I just want to experiment for myself.

so got it all in and did a tune up on it at the same time- plugs, wire, cap, rotor. Coil was new when I bought it.

anyway, now I need to set the timing, I know its off as it takes too long to start now.

I tried to just throw a timing light on it, but I couldn't see anything.

I'm guessing my plan of attack will be what I consider the "standard" way:
turn the motor over by hand till I can see the timing marks, use some white paint to mark the flywheel and then time it with my light

just wanted to see if there were any tricks I might not know about?

Not sure but I suspect that static timing will not work with EI.

Clean the flywheel area where the timing marks are and mark the 5 degree BTDC line with white paint.

Now use good DC powered timing light in low ambient light.

If tractor is 6V may want to power timing light from 12V battery.

Got her done. Tractor is 12 volt so it was easy.

Took me longer to find the timing marks than actually time it.

Honestly first impressions I am damn impressed with EI. Runs smooth and sounds strong. And I can idle it down to 300 rpms
