1962 Ford 4000 (gas burner)

Been a long time since I've posted or replied to others comments but I do come to the site and read from time to time so here goes: My neighbor passed away back in Nov 2014 and since then I've stored his 62 Ford 4000 in my barn as theft is terrible in my neck of the woods and was requested by family to do so. Now they are ready to sell and a family member told them that a dealer said the tractor is worth $2500, dealer knows nothing of this tractor and has never seen and no family members have even looked at it to my knowledge. Here is whats wrong with it, needs radiator, starter, solenoid, fuel valve under the tank, carb rebuilt, battery, wiring, plugs, points, condenser, etc that adds up to more than $600 worth of parts just to have a dependable old tractor. I offered $1500 and then upped my offer to $1750 and waiting on their decision, told them everything that I know about the old gal and trying to be honest about it but they think I'm lowballing. I can make all necessary repairs my self and I told them that besides the cost of replacement parts that they would also be incurring the cost labor too if they don't accept my final offer of $1750. Was skipping and running hot when neighbor brought it to my barn 8 months ago, not a running tractor at this time. I have went over it with a fine tooth comb and know what it needs but think that $2500 is too much for the repairs needed. What do ya'll think of my offer?

Storage at $25 a day will help with the $2500 price. Must not be top notch folks to ask you that much. just my honest opinion
Possession is 9 tenths of the law by the way.

I think you offers to much as when you get what you have
found fixed more trouble could be on the way. This is my
thought .

Is this a five speed? If so, then I'd say your offer of 1750 is fair. If it's a Select-O-Speed, then I think you're $500 high.

I suggest you tell them your offer stands, and they have 30 days to either accept it or come get the 4000. When they figure out what it's going to cost to transport the tractor to the dealer who says it's worth $2500, and when they realize that he's not going to give them more than 800 bucks for it, I think they'll take your offer.

situation 'feels' bad, I'd tell them to get it out and I'd walk.
I don't want it at any price (there is always another tractor...)

storage fee....up to you.
your post of 'family requested' you store it in your barn?
Was there any talk of payment?
If not, people that have the brass to ask with no talk of payment...............like I said, bad situation, wash your hands of it.

Was asked to store tractor with option to buy when estate was settled, it does have the 5 speed transmission. I thought my offer was spot on and very fair for condition of the tractor, just wanted to know what some of the rest of you thought about the old work horse. Thanks for all comments, I think we're all on the same page.

Did they get you to store the tractor before the official appraisal of the estate was done? Then tell them that you'll be happy to let the estate tax people know that they were hiding assets.

your offer, IMHO, was too much.

it's a 500$ tractor till you know it has no bad engine problems from overheating.

that machine will never go 2500$ as it is..heck, when fixed, depending on your location it might be just able to get 2500$.

If it was me and I thought it would run if fixed, I'd back my offer down to a MAX of 1500$ let em come get it if they want it that bad.

I agree your offer sounds more than generous to me.

I bought my 860 in April, it needed nothing to go to work and I paid less than 2500 for it.
bought my 871 at the end of May, paid less than 1750 for it and it needs very little.

Waiting game now on the purchase of it, supposed to get a text from family as they are settling property as to who wants what. Will stand firm on my offer of $1750 and hope it is accepted as i could use this old Ford as my pond mowing tractor, got an old John Deere sickle mower that is a pain to hook up and would like to leave it on the tractor at all times to mow around banks of my ponds.
