Ford 4600SU pto seal leak

Hi all,
I pulled off the PTO cover to start finding the source of a PTO leak. I have read about the trouble with the thrust washer dropping blocking the re-entry path of the shaft. So before pulling out the PTO, maybe the fix is not so bad. If I only replace the gasket that sits inside this PTO cover is that enough? That is where the leak is, around the shaft. The PTO shaft has no play or wiggle in it at all. I am wondering what are the symptoms that something is broken or worn out in the PTO besides just an oil leak.

The edge of the rubber seal that faces out of the tractor looks rough but I do not know how important that is to making a seal.

I have another question also. How do I get the seal out to replace it? That seal does not want to pop out. something seems to be holding it in place

Seals are generally a press fit, meaning it takes a hammer to install it, and a hammer to get it out. A small cold chisel usually works well also.

If it's a two faced seal, both are important, inner to keep oil in and outer to keep dust out. Check the shaft for a grove where the seal rides. A badly groved shaft means a new seal for sure. Amazing how rubber can cut through tempered steel if given enough time.

Remove the circlip "in the groove" and then tap out the seal with a large socket.

Make sure there is NOT a groove worn on the pto shaft or the new seal will leak. If so get a custom double seal from a seal warehouse.

My local New Holland dealer installed the new seal for me. It looks a lot different. I will post pics. Who knows maybe this will help someone else :)

Now the rear axle fluid inspection hole is a problem. It has a plug in it that uses an allen wrench to remove. Looks kind of worn from the previous owner and it is not coming out. I have the WD-40 soaking it. Then I guess I will try heating with a torch. Never drilled out a bolt before. What a chore this has become!

Got the PTO cover back on. Drained the little bit of axle fluid left. I found an interesting blob of metallic paste on the magnetic drain plug, glad I decided to check. Then went to refill the rear axle fluid and could not get the stripped allen head plug out of the inspection hole (haha! Of course.) 80 mile drive to buy a set of bolt extractors, then 30 mile drive next day to get a new square head plug to replace that sorry allen head plug. Went to fill it back up with fluid, 5 gallons went in, then another 5 gallons went in, then another 30 mile trip to Walmart to get more and it took one more gallon, 44 quarts in all. He is a thirsty old goat! Ahh the country life. No leaks though. I attached my Frontier GM1060S groomer and mowed the heck out of this place. Now I get to figure out what seals to replace on my Bush Hog that I abused.

nice looking seal.. has a dirt seal and then a hydrualic seal... or so it appears.. a double seal. should be good for 30 to 40 years and it will get hard again and start leaking all over. life goes on.
