Timing gears on 1220

Need some help with a 1220 ford .
I have poor compression on #1 and 3 cyls number two will make smoke but the other two won't.
I pulled the head and had it gone over at the machine shop put it together with same results.
I switched injectors with same results, the pistons seem tight in there bores.i pulled the timing cover to ck the timing it seems unlikely but have
to ck.
The Manuel shows how to set the gears up but no mater how many times I turn it over it never lines up.
Is it different for a 3 cyl .?
Any help would be great thanks

The timing marks should line up properly once for every 2 turns of the crankshaft gear. If they aren't lining up, then the pump may not have been installed properly.

Can you give us some history? Is this tractor new to you and it's had the problem since you got it? Or have you had it for a while and it was running fine and then it had the problem?

It!s new to me I acquired it from a neighbor in (as is condition)
He had used it sparingly around his property .seems to me it started out as a hard to start issue he had tried glow plugs but I don!t know what
else got to the point of not starting at all.
Should I try and reset the timing? How would it have gotten off?
Thanks

If none of the teeth are worn or broken, then the only way I can think of for the timing to be off is if someone removed the pump and/or the gears and reinstalled them incorrectly.
