'59 871 carb question

Been a while since I've posted, but have a question regarding the M/S carb on my tractor.

The only markings are on the carb bowl, 10A 355, there is no tag. From what I can find, I don't [i:428702ce02]think[/i:428702ce02] this is the correct carb, but not 100% positive.

Pretty sure I can get a kit for it (mine has a either a stuck needle or leaking float), curious whether I should try to find the correct carb or just use the one I have. Seemed to work ok for the past 7 or so years I've owned it.

orked good for 7 years............I sure would not change to an unknown horse! Kit & clean time.

Makes sense to me too, just wanted to make sure before I order a kit.

I'm not sure about the number on the fuel bowl you posted but if it is an M/S carb maybe it could be the correct one for your tractor and if
so it would likely be a TSX-769 (or TSX-813) and it would appear as in the diagram. If that is the case, be careful as some suppliers sell
two different size floats which they say fit a TSX-769, but mine required the larger one, so be careful. -Will

for the most part there are 2 kits that fit most ford 134- 172s one is the small bowl 134s and maybe some early 172s the rest are the large bowl,

Kit should be here tomorrow or Thursday. Based on my research, mine is a TSX355 and that's the kit I ordered. Don't know whether mine is a large or small bowl since I don't have the other size to compare to. Was sort of a hodge podge of a tractor when I got it, so who knows if the carb is correct.

The carb worked fine until I let it sit through the winter and when fuel dribbled out of the carb after I refilled the tank, I knew I either had a stuck needle or leaky float. I'm betting (hoping) it's a stuck needle. At least the fuel shutoff worked, I'd never tried it until I needed it.

Better check to be sure no fuel got down into the crankcase. It can do that if there is fuel in the tank and the needle valve is bad. -Will

Good point Will. Already checked and none in the crankcase. I was fortunate to be standing next to the tractor right after filling the tank, saw the fuel dripping, and closed the shut off valve immediately. Had I not done so, I'm sure at least some of the 10 gals I put in the tank would have ended up crankcase.

Tap on the bowl a bit and see if the needle then seats (leak stops, might be the needle not seating, leak keeps leaking, might be the float).
Or just wait for the kit and rebuild.

First kit was wrong, so if anyone runs into this in the future, you cannot "assume" the second half of the float bowl number is the TSX series. Kit I got was for a large bowl, and I now know mine is a small bowl. Still have no clue exactly what model mine is but the source I got mine from was able to match up the correct kit from several pictures. He promptly processed a refund after I sent the other kit back.

Have been out of town and just finished rebuilding the carb. Will install after lunch and see how it runs if it doesn't get too hot by then - not even noon and already 90°!

CBull - I had already pulled the carb, and good thing too. Take a look at the sediment I found in the float bowl...

Doesn't look that bad in the float bowl but it was a lot worse than it looked...

I was told this carb had been rebuilt prior to me buying it.

At least I know the carb and inlet filter are spotless now.

Forgot to follow up on this. Once installed and fuel valve opened all worked just the same as before and no leaks. Convinced this is not the correct carb, but it gets the job done.

Smaller carb on an 801 will probably keep you from getting the last few available horses out of the engine, but on the other hand it should sip fuel, so if you don't absolutely need those last few hp I would keep it the way it is..
