We have done the following.

1. Had stater rebuilt
2. Put in new solenoid from local ford tractor dealer .
picture is of old solenoid set up.

My understanding is electrical is not shutting off to allow starter drive to retract.
Is this a ground issue?
How do I test ignition switch, track down issue?

One of the 2 small wires on the solenoid is the start wire. Pull one at a time and try to start it up. That way you will know which is which. Then with the one off that is the start one turn it on and touch it to the solenoid. If it tries to start you either have a wiring problem or bad switch

My guess is that you've incorrectly wired the relay shown in the pic. If it's a "Ford style" relay, the "I" terminal is not used. This is likely your problem.

On the gas tractor didn't they use the I as a ballast resister by pass for better starting??

(quoted from post at 20:35:01 06/05/15) Shoot what is there maybe 1 in 10 gas 5000s if not more like 1 in 30??

Picture is of the old set up and this arrangement worked for 4 years. We took the old starter and they said it was shot had to rebuild. We replace solenoid with new wired same as old.
Still starter will not disengage.
We decided the switch is old so ordered a new one for $20.OO
will have it Monday.
I will let you all know if the OLD switch was the issue.

You all are so very kind to help. Hay season is coming up fast and my equine friends sure need the hay.

WOW so I have a rear gas ford 5000. It also has a very nice wesendorff front end loader. I tell you I could not live without this tractor around our little farm it is a work horse of a tractor especially with the front end loader.

I sure wish I could get in the fields and do hay but been to wet here so far. Have had rain almost every day for a month now

I had the same problem this spring on my 4000.I replaced switch and regrounded the solinod.Works great now.

I believe this will also fix mine. Needed to get tractor and equipment ready for hay season going to be tricky getting hay in this year.
THANKS
