He thinks its a 73..Somehow the gas leaked out of the tank and started a fire from a bare wire. Has power steering. What's a fair offer? Im not familiar with these series but he was told it just needed a new wiring harness and and belts.

Depends upon how far away it is, but it could be worth about $1000. Loader and tires. The SOS and fire damage make the rest of it a big risk.

I'm starting to hate cell phone photos.
They give you enough of a glimpse to pique your interest but not enough to see any detail.
It's a pre 4/68 judging by the louvers.
Good catch on the SOS cdmn.
A little fire doesn't hurt them.
As long as it doesn't get hot enough to burn the tires.
It'll probably need a battery, wiring, radiator and carb. Maybe an intake manifold.
It isn't a real desirable model - gasser, SOS, crappy loader.
Yeah $1K is in the zone.

Ya im not sure why the pics uploaded so big. They were crappy on my phone too. It needs a new right front tire. I don't think he is too far away from me though I didn't get exact location. Now that I know it has a sos I think i'll not make him an offer. He said the loader isn't the best either. If anyone else is interested in it I can pass along his # Im venturing he's down by Fargo ND

(quoted from post at 11:45:57 06/01/15)Somehow the gas leaked out of the tank and started a fire from a bare wire.

The standard method is the bare wire (which has been rubbed bare by the seam on the gas tank, and is the main positive cable, no fuse) strikes an arc on the gas tank, burns a hole through it, and that both causes the gas leak and the larger scale fire. It's a design defect. Always check, replace if needed, and sleeve the positive cable on these tractors (65-74 thousand series, possibly more than that, I don't know much outside the ones I actually own.) If it happens when in the barn, the results of the fire can be far worse.

It is a standard fire (probably the standard fire) on the affected models.

Hi
Sometimes a guy gets lucky with burned tractors sometimes it's just a large headache. I have worked on both for customers. There are some tractors out there catch fire for a reason to. Like they are mechanically wrong before the fire. I used to work a wrecking yard job and deal with those guys now for used parts. They still tell me what they see when taking burned tractors apart. It's not hard on some models to find out why they catch fire in genuine use. then "Replicate" that on one that needs expensive repairs to claim insurance and get out of it not saying thats the case here for sure but ya never know with some guys..
I think you made a wise choice to not go any further with it as it has Sos, Manual trans don't normally give much trouble if looked after.
Regards Robert

I sleeved the battery cable with rubber hose on our 3600 for that same reason, as it did live in the barn when not in use, diesel, but still, best to be able to sleep at night LOL !

I used that flexible plastic conduit that they use on automotive wire harnesses these days to sleeve both battery cables on my '73 4000. I didn't like that they were routed down behind the tray hinge pin and might be pinched if someone wasn't careful when they swung the battery back in place.
