1954 NAA rear end mystery

Took the left side axle housing off and removed differential. Was doing brakes and the lower link pin was loose so might as well get it done. Unfortunately found some metal pieces in the nasty sludge. Looks like something broke off and end of pinion shaft. Anyone know what this might be? Does it need to be there? See photos. Looked at parts catalog and should be a retaining ring on the end holding the bearing in. Bearing is walking out a little. Still something broke away from casting.

Maybe it's a piece of gear tooth that broke off in an earlier failure and didn't get cleaned out
at that time.

Added pictures to my bigger problem. One of the pins in the carrier cross sheared off. Not sure where it went. Anyone have advice? I am tempted to find a new cross, tig weld up the wallowed out hole and put back together. Anyone have ideas. I would be ok finding a differential but could be expensive.

I was thinking this part of the NAA was same as 8n. If so, this part should not be hard to find nor expensive. IMO, the fix you have in mind will
give you the opportunity to do it over in the future with possibly more damage than you have now.

Thanks for the picture. This will help. Anyone have the sheetmetal deflector or the cross and small gears?
