starter wont disengage

ford 4400

New User
let me start out by saying im new to tractors , with that being said i just bought a 1967 4400 for 1200 have serviced it and put battery back on, started right up but when i turned off it kept running ,put new switch on , had to disconnect from battery to turn off . does this sound like the solenoid or is it the starter ? any info or test to preform would be greatly appreciated

I agree, sounds like solenoid unless the wireing is messed up so that the solenoid is staying engeged any time it has power. however if this were so, it would try to crank as soon as bat is hooked up. if not doing this, whack the solenoid with a hammer to see if it pops free.

low voltage starts sometimes weld the contacts.

if the hot is connected the ground will like weld the negetative post and the tractor starts to crank like th switch is on

no sure I was able to decode that short line of code there, but sounds like you said that as soon as you hookup the battery it tries to turn over. Deffinately look at wireing first. take the control wire off the solenoid. if it still tries to turn over, then it's the contacts stuck or welded.

sometimes a hammer pop fixes, other times you either need to R or R them.

Solenoids tend to weld up from heat and a low battery can cause that problem and good chance your solenoid is now bad. But that said you can try to pull the small wire off the solenoid and if it then does not turn over when you hook up the battery you have a bad switch or some other problem in the wiring

thank you guys. does anyone have a part # by chance dont know much about this old machine ? also my knobs where the loader goes up and down is leaking do they make repair kits or rebuild kits or something

I assume this tractor is a gasser?
I wonder if you don't have your hot wire and start wires mixed up.
Those are great old tractors. Absolutely bulletproof.
Most any part is available - either new or used.
Probably the New Holland Dealer could get you new seals for the valves but any good hydraulic house could likely also get them too.
Keep in mind that it is a simple two spool valve so before you go spend a big chunk of dough rebuilding it you might find a similar 2 spool valve - new for a lot less money.
It's at least worth considering.

thanks ive been looking for a wiring diagram but cantfind one and dont have 200 to spend on manual do u know where one is or how to tell wires which is which

The I&T FO-31 manual sells for less than $30.00 and covers the ag chassis 2000/3000/4000 series, and the 4400 is the same as the ag chassis 4000 in many respects, including the engine and electrical wiring. The I&T manual has 2 wiring diagrams, one for the USA made tractors and one for the European made ones.

Also, here's a resource you will find very useful. Click on the link below and then bookmark it. It is the New Holland Parts Lookup site with the 4400 already selected as the model:
