Exhaust smoking white during engine crancking

I have a ford 5000 and engine and exhaust is smoking white during crancking. The engine doesn't start when engine is at ambient temperature. I need to puff a quick start in the intake port for a start. When started exhaust is smoking white for a few minutes and become clear. Oil is aslso blowing out of the level gauge when pulled out.

What might be the cause? What can I do to cure the problem?

Thanks to all

Sounds like it is probably a diesel. White smoke means that it is getting fuel and it is atomizing as it should. Poor starting when fuel is there at warm temperatures is usually due to lack of compression, due to either slow crank or worn piston rings. Slow crank is usually poor starter cable connections or weak battery. Combining the white smoke with blowing oil out of the dip stick tube, however points to badly worn piston rings.

On most engines if you pull the dip stick out with it running oil will blow out of the engine due to things moving and throwing oil all over the place.

okay.. how to make it better?

run a good 15w40 diesel oil like shell rotella, mobil delvac, or chevron delo.

run a can if commercial injector cleaner through it... find a can of BG 44k or 244k.

Make sure you have a great battery, and great battery cables. Clean all connections on both ends, particularly at the starter solenoid.

The hd diesel oil will clean the rings and make sure they are not coked up and help get good compression.

The commercial injector cleaner will help clean the nozzles so the fuel is atomized so it will start quicker.

The faster you crank the engine, the more heat it will develop to make the engine start. cranking has to develop 400 degrees of heat through compression to fire off the engine, and cranking faster will develop more compression and heat. So the very best battery, cables and starter are needed to crank the engine fast.

also making sure the air filter is not clogged can help, and correctly timed injector pump will help.

Agree except for the cause of the white smoke: Water in the combustion chamber and probably condensation from the engine being
cold and having to come up to temp to evaporate the moisture. Worn rings would lower the combustion pressure and delay the exit.

My first diesel was bought with the dealer having to use ether to start it in April in N. TX. An inframe OH and a few more extra parts
later plus about $1500 and lot of work on my part, I found out why he had to use a starting aid in the spring.

Perfect. On the cable connections, don't forget that on most tractors, the ground is made to the engine casting somewhere as is the
starter case attached to the same engine casting. These connections are part of the circuit too and usually get overlooked, I run a 00
wire over to a starter mounting bolt and ensure that the starter housing is clean when I put the lug under the mounting bolt. Hygiene
does matter.
