replacement Injectors - OEM worth the price?

I've got a 1976 Ford 4100. One of my tractor buddies thinks at least one of my injectors is "blatting" rather than creating a spray. I've got black, gooey residue at the top of the exhaust manifold where the muffler attaches. Assuming he's correct, I went looking for replacement injectors, the ones in the engine are probably original, so it's not a stretch to imagine that after 40 years they might be getting tired.

There seems to be a number of good aftermarket sources, including here, that are half the price of the OEM ones my New Holland dealer wants to sell me. They claim the OEM are superior for a variety of reasons. I thought I'd check in here and see what your experiences have been.

Others here can tell you more about the injectos.
When was the last time you took the tractor out and worked the snot out of it?
The black slobber you are seeing could just be from wetstacking if the engine doen't get worked hard occasionally.

Whoa!!!
First things first... have you cracked each line open with the engine idling and see how much the rpm's drop when each one is opened? They should all cause roughly the same drop. If one doesn't do anything then you can assume you have a problem on that cylinder which may be a bad injector or may be a dead cylinder. To me... if they're all the same I'd wager the injectors are probably good.
The main enemies of injectors are water, dirt and high hours.... not age.
As long as it starts reasonably well and all cylinders are about even I'd say the injectors are fine.
What you should so is take the tractor out and WORK THE SNOT OUT OF IT. All diesel engines will slobber, especially during the winter... and moreso when they're not worked hard. It doesn't indicate that anything is wrong with them other than the thermostat may be too cold or they're just not working hard enough. So take it out and work it to full power for a day. I bet most of the slobber will dry off and that will be the end of it.

Questions does it start hard cold and does it smoke under load two thing that happen with bad injectors. I check mine every 1000 hrs I just bought a 7710 that had 4500 hrs it was a state mower tractor and was yellow and still had yellow injectors pretty sure they were orginal. When checked all 4 were down on trip pressure and 2 had pattern issues.

Time to add a follow up. I have never heard of "wetstacking" but it seems that might have been my problem. Big Blue has been getting a good workout this past week and the black slobber has gone away.

Every time I come on here I learn, thanks to all of you willing to share your knowledge and experience. No doubt I will be back with more questions.
