641 Emergency Brake

A couple years ago I put new brake shoes on my 641. The old ones did not look that bad but I replaced them anyway. The spring loaded pawl thingy that locks the emergency brake on did not work good before or after the brake work I did. Is something worn in the mechanism causing this or was it just a poor design? Did it work good when these tractors were new?

Others here are better versed on those 4 cylinder tractors than I.
But I'm thinking you are referring to the brake lock as I'm not aware of an emergency brake system on those.

The brake locks on my 64 4000 S-O-S (retrofitted from non-S-O-S tractor) and 55 860 (with 861 brake lock system) work well. Any malfunction with your lock system is unrelated to the brake lining.

I have three tractors that have that type of brake and they all work correctly, but they did not always work. The main problem has been rust that keeps the pawl from engaging.

.......and legs are strong
When you are driving a tractor, you don't realize how
hard you are pushing that pedal, especially to lock up a wheel.
When setting your brake lock....push that pedal.
When setting a lock on a hill when you are motionless,
(especially those pesky tractors where you have to bend way over to do it)
I always think....wow, I push this hard to stop rolling when driving?....lol...guess I do
