ford 3000 gas

There is a Ford 3000 gas for sale down from my house. Paint ain't the best but it would make me a good hay tractor. It has been sitting a year after this woman's husband died. She wants $800 for it but it ain't been started in a year. My question is what to look for on this model tractor and also the balls out of the 3 pt arms are missing. How do you get them back in? Thanks

Pretty much any 3 cylinder Ford is worth $800 - dead or alive.
Getting them running is the same as any other infernal combustion engine - they need fuel, air and spark at the right time.
I would bring some fresh gas, a point file, a fresh battery, a jumper wire and an ohm meter or test light and see what happens.
Twin sticks on the transmission are better than one. Differential lock pedal under your right heel is a plus.
Power steering is a plus as are any remote valves under the seat.
You've been aroud here long enough to look for oil in the water, water in the oil, cracks, welds, bad leaks and other horrors. Also the tires.
Post the 3 lines of numbers found just above and behind the starter and someone here can ID it for you. Determine if it has lpto or whatever.
They are great small tractors.

It has one shifter and power steering. What do y'all think now. I'm going again tomorrow with a battery. Here is a pic

I've lost balls out of my 3 point. You just take a cutting torch or plasma torch and cut off the end of the linkage and weld the replacements on. Any store that handles farm repairs probably has them on the shelf. Ask for the "category 1 link ends". Here's one listed on Ebay.

Looks like a very early high tin model.
I'm guessing just a 4 speed. Has ps though. That's worth $800 if you part it out.
And an alternator so no tach. Fine.
Drawbar is there and worth $50-$75 of your $800.
All four of the black things look like they're round and hold air.
The lift arms likely have convertable cat 1/cat2 balls so you just turn them sideways and slip them in. Look in the tool box and see if the balls are there.
I think you'd better go get that tractor and not fiddle around too much or quibble on the price either.

Yeah she is giving me first chance on it. Wonder if the motor could be locked although it only sat a year. Front tires are new. No water in the oil either and has antifreeze. This tractor was bought new by her husband and he used it on his dairy farm. Doesn't look beat up just been used. Wonder how the carburetor will be. I've never owned a gas tractor always diesels

From the photos it appears to be a 4 speed. The 4 speeds are geared high and do not have live PTO.

That said, for $800, buy it now and ask questions later.

I couldn't see the nose on it but it looks like a pretty straight old tractor otherwise.
The Holly carbs suck. They're overly complex and finniky. And the fuel systems have most of 6' of tubing from the tank to the front timing cover where the fuel pump is and then back to the carb. There are no less than 4 fuel filters on it.
It will run off gravity flow if you want to bypass some of that to test it with a temp lawnmower tank.
Easy enough to bring a 1 1/8" box end wrench and put it on the front nut on the pully if it wont turn over the usual way.

It is unlikely that the engine is stuck after sitting for a year, especially with a flipper (maybe not fully closed) on the exhaust. If you are concerned, hold the fan belt tight and pull on a fan blade, carefully, of course, to see if you can rotate the engine.

The tractor will have a Holley carb if it has not been changed. The Holley carb has an unearned bad reputation but there are a few of us on this forum that can help you if you need to rebuild it. When right, it performs well and is economical.

A more significant issue can be the vacuum advance motor as the engine and carburetor accelerator pump will not perform properly if the vacuum advance motor does not function. Many do not and they are (or at least have been) NLS.

I don't know hunter, you should pass. Where did you say she lives again? :)

Buy it and then figure it out. For $800 I don't think you can go wrong - unless you have to pay someone else to fix it.

You know I am a Holley lubber... I have no I.D. if my vacuum advance works and don't care.. It will operate just fine with out it, I don't understand how it can affect the accelerator pump explain that please...

I always like these kind of posts.
Amazing, impossible, deals.
There could be inside parts sticking outside on that tractor
and I'd still buy it at that price.

Don't wait.
I wouldn't do it to someone I knew, or anybody here on YT, but if I randomly drove by
and saw it....
My always first question on something 'held' for someone else...
"do you have the money yet or a deposit?"
and if it's something I'm really looking for...watch out...lol.
laying 15, hundred dollar bills on her table might sway a saint....
