3000 gasket set - 2 oil pan gaskets? & WP question.

Ok, so 1968 158 3 cyl gas 3000 is going back together after a .040 bore job to correct the damage from a dropped (& chewed up and swallowed) valve.

The gasket set has 2 oil pan gaskets in it - a black one and a blue one, both paper (haven't mic'd them to check thickness yet) - it's a cast iron pan, the old one had 2 holes in the old gasket that weren't used, just gooped up with sealer (at the rear of the motor). Any idea which one I need to use?

Also, the waterpump is original as far as I know - is that something I can inspect before reassembly (like I did with the oil pump) - check to make sure the impeller is attached and no excessive play in the pump? I don't really want to drop $50 on a new pump if I don't need it.

Thanks

Tough call on the water pump. With the fan on it if you can shake it at all I would bite the bullet for a new one. If it's tight I would use it.
As for the gaskets I would use the thinner one. That pan is part of the structural integrity of the tractor so you don't want it squishing around on a thick, soft gasket.
Also, if the gasket is too thick you have a hard time getting the bolts from the pan to the transmission to go through the hole.
It sounds like you've got it on the run now.
I'm sure I need not remind you that we like pictures here.

I really wanted to post pics, I just hate how I live with clutter and didn't want to show progress until things were cleaned up..... but you've shamed me into it now, I'll dig some up.

Unfortunately nothing "in action" I hate to grab the camera while my hands are dirty. Shortblock is together and bagged until we get back from Yellowstone. I'll take more pics as it goes together

One gasket would be for the cast oil pan and the other would be used if you had a pressed steel oil pan. I can't tell you which is which by color but as Ultradog said, use the thin one with the cast pan.
