I have a new to me 1710 1983 I tried to put the pto in gear with the trans. and the shuttle in neutral but it ground gears. I had to turn off the engine then shift the pto in before restarting. I believe the owners manual say's trans. in neutral and clutch in I thought I followed those instructions ok, I even put the shuttle in neutral. Am I doing something wrong I am used to 2n's and 8n's and often post on that forum and tractor talk but I will be here more often now. I just finished changing a 7 foot ford sickle bar over to screws and nuts with all new sections, high rise hold downs and rock guards with help from this sight. BTW I bought the FO 44 service manual and have the original owners manual as well as owners manuals for the sickle bar mower and the 770 loader. So with help from here and manuals I should be in good shape.

Your tractor probably has a 2 stage clutch. The first thing to do is make sure the clutch pedal has the proper amount of free play. When you depress the clutch pedal the first stage will disengage the transmission and the second stage will disengage the PTO. If the second stage isn't working there are internal adjusting screws on the pressure plate that can be accessed through the rubber plug on the left side of the clutch housing. Unfortunately you need to remove the loader mount to remove the plug and make the adjustment.
