4 cyl 4000 tach cable

Hi all,

I ordered a new tachometer and cable from this website last week. I've attached the bottom end ("keyed" shaft) of the cable to the back of the hydraulic pump and can see the flexible internal shaft on the opposite end spin with the tractor running. However, when i attach this end (shaft is square in cross section) to the tach, the tach does not read anything. It looks like the receiving female portion of the gauge itself is a plain round bore, whereas the tach cable itself is square. I know this is an absurd question to ask as it should be extremely simple, but am I missing some sort of adapter or something? There must be a problem with the coupling of the tach cable to the gauge, because as I mentioned I know the cable is spinning but when I put it on the back of the tach gauge nothing registers...any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a ridiculous question.

Thanks in advance,

Most likely the square opening in the brass coupling in your tach is worn out. Not uncommon.

If so, you will need to replace the tach (or have it repaired by a speedometer shop).

Dean,

It is a brand new tach - could it have been mis-manufactured? Or perhaps they (YT) sent me the wrong one by chance?
