Tune up... now idle is twice as fast

First time poster here.

Been soaking up all the good info for 2 years.

With your "411" I've been able to completely rewire 2 tractors and do quite a bit of other maintenance and troubleshooting as well.

I really enjoy tinkering with these machines (hard for me to refer to it as work)... although the NAA's exhaust elbow gasket replacement tried my patience (off and on) for several days (that inner bolt...).

Can't wipe the smile from my face when operating these machines. Wife gets a kick out of watching... one of these days I'm sure she'll be at the steering wheel (Step Down 1st, no doubt).

-'46 2N (12 volt, Step Up Sherman)(my son's).
-'54 NAA (6 volt, Step Up/Down Sherman).

Tuned up the NAA today (condensor, points (.025), rotor, cap, plugs (.025) and plug wires (solid core of course).
Before the tune up she would idle at 450 RPM and needed a little choke held for several seconds after the first kick.
After the tune up, she starts noticeably faster\easier, with no choke at all, seems to run smoother too, but now she idles at just below 900 rpm.

In the future for the NAA;
Brakes, rear axle seals, hydraulic piston seals, center hood re-alignment and paint.

For the 2N;
Exhaust manifold leak above the usual 4th cylinder, brakes, axle seals, tires and eventually paint.

Any suggestions?

Thx,

Try adjusting the stop screw on the linkage so the carb throttle butterfly will close off a bit more. Also try this you may find you have a combo Sherman. Put the Sherman in neutral and then pull out side ways. If it pulls out about a 1/2 inch then pull it up again. If it does that you have a 3 speed combo and you are now in standard gearing

Thx "old" I'll try that stop screw adjustment.

The 2N looks to have the Step Up Sherman Or no lateral movement when in neutral.
Shifter handles certainly appear to be the same.

If you timed it too fast you can have that problem, but it it runs ok otherwise, I'd go for the idle adjustment screw also.

Thx "TexasMark1".

Didn't remove the distributor, so timing is as it was, before the tune up. Yep, distributor parts replacement would have been easier if I had removed the distributor, but it wasn't terrible.
