841 diesel no start.

I have finally been able to get back to what I believe is a 841 1960 model diesel. The transmission appears to have been changed, The nos on the model and sn. boss are 303d/ 05466. Other nos cast into the case are die 310835 and 1a161. any info would be appreciated. The injection pump was rebuilt before I got it but it never started. I need to check the timing, I have the service manual but I need to know how to find 23 degrees btdc. are there marks on the timing cover and pulley or where?
I am new to tractors, any help would be appreciated.

Timing mark will be on the flywheel under a little tab below the hydraulic pump if it indeed is an 841. However, the numbers you give for model and sn do not compute to 841.

Vettenut, in your original post you said that it "looks similar to a 671" and now you say you "believe" it is an 841. You never posted pictures to let us help you figure out what it actually is, so we're going on your guesses at the moment. It's not a good idea to start working on something if you're not sure exactly what it is. On the right side of the engine block there should be a raised casting number. Knowing that casting number would help identify the engine and year range. If it is an '01 series Ford diesel tractor then the casting number should be one of the following:

144 ci for 601 series:
B9NN6015A
C0NN6015H

172 ci for 801 series:
B9NN6015B
C0NN6015C

The number cast on the side of the engine is: CONN 6015C. I tried to send a picture if the file makes it. Thanks

If you can get a helper, that is good.

Remove the inspection cover for the flywheel (right hand side of bell housing). Remove the inspection cover on the injection pump (little plate held in place by two small screws. There should also be a rubber seal between plate and pump housing).

Find 18* on the flywheel. That is BTDC for the 172ci engines. The way I did it is to quickly hit the starter button until you get close. Then use a wrench on the crankshaft pully lever to refine it. Use your helper as either the grunt or the spotter.

Then rotate the pump tang counter-clockwise until the timing mark in the timing window will be an 1/8" to the right of the fixed timing mark on the cam.

I would be happy to scan and email you the directions from the Ford service manual if you'd like.
