the temp gauge on my 1973 ford 2000 is the type with colors, blue for cool red for hot,the needle never moves even after hard work,,,how can I check to see if it works?

John linked to some great info for you.
But easy things first. Is the wire connected to the sending unit on the front of the head?
It is a male spade connector and they are easy to break off if doing any work up there - water pump, etc. I've probably seen more of them broken off than intact.

First thing to do is check to see if the wire is connected to the sender at the front of the head. If it is, pull it off and ground it with the key turned on and see if the gauge sweeps. If it does, the gauge and wire are fine and sender is bad. If the gauge doesn't move then you need to verify that the gauge is getting power and then ground the sender wire from the gauge to verify the wire is good... if the gauge sweeps, repair the sender wire. If it doesn't... you have a bad gauge.
It's also not uncommon to have power supply problems to those gauges due to bad voltage stabilizers, etc.

Ground the wire that goes to the sending unit it should be in the front part of the head. The needle should go the oppsite side of the gauge
