971 hyd. pump leak?

I have a 1959 971 gas that is gaining oil lately. It is not water as that is staying up and I always shut the gas off and the oil is not gassy smelling. My hydraulics are down on the dipstick some so I'm thinking maybe the seal on the pump shaft may be leaking the oil out of the pump and into the motor. I never have trouble with loosing the prime but this tractor did sit for about 15 to 20 years before I fixed the imput shaft and overhauled the motor about 2 years ago so the seal may have dried out. Is this a problem that shows up sometimes or not? Just wanted to see if you folks out there have any ideas what else it could be or confirm my thought that it is the pump before I tear the pump off and rebuild it for no reason. Thanks in advance Greg NE

It is highly unlikely(but maybe possible) that hydraulic oil is getting into the engine . The seal that seals between the engine oil and hyd oil is on the intake side of the hyd pump. I would make 100% sure the amount of oil that gets into the engine is the same amount that leaves the hyd.

It is not water as that is staying up

I assume that you mean coolant. Is the tractor kept outside? If so, it could be rain water getting in somehow. Try cracking the drain plug after the tractor has set for a couple of days and see if any water comes out before the oil.
