NAA Starter not fully Engaging

Hi All,
I'm new to these pages, so please forgive me any mistakes.
I just brought home a '53 NAA today. The starter will only turn the engine over for about 1/2 a turn before it starts freewheeling. After removing the starter I see that the drive is the 8N style instead of the NAA through '64(?)style. I would replace the drive, but the shaft has nearly a 1/4" end play, so I probably need to replace the starter?
Looking at the flywheel with an inspection mirror, the backside of the teeth are a little worn in spots, and it doesn't appear that the drive has been engaging the full depth of the teeth.
A couple of questions:
Is the 8N style drive different enough that it might not fully engage the ring gear of the NAA? Is it possible that when the previous owner replaced the clutch that in resurfacing the flywheel the ring gear depth changed enough to cause only partial engagement?
If I'm overthinking this, and should just replace the starter, tell it to me straight. It just seems like the drive isn't coming in far enough for full engagement, as opposed to slipping internally.
Thanks in advance!

Not engaging all the way [i:14a8db67e9]may[/i:14a8db67e9] be just because the
starter shaft is sticky/dirty. Especially if it is still 6V.
But more likely the teeth are wore short on the Bendix.

The end play would concern me regardless though.
If you have a good local rebuild shop have it rebuilt.
Originals tend to be better than replacements.

BTW, if it is still 6V make sure all the connections are
clean and tight, including both ends of the batter cables
and the mounting hole to starter mating sufaces.
Use big as your finger - 0/00 gauge battery cables.
The little 4 gauge automotive cables won't cut it for 6V.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks Royse. I'll check into getting it rebuilt and a new drive installed locally. Between the '52 8N I have and this new to me NAA, I'm pretty sure I'll be back here again. By reading archived posts on different subjects I was able to get my 8N in good running shape. Hope to do the same with the NAA.
