Timing tractor after electronic ignition inst.

I replaced points with elec. ign. on my Ford 850. It runs great but every once in awhile it wants to "run on". How do I adjust the timing? Thanks

iming (strobe) light.

You should have an inspection cover on the rear of the engine which will show the timing marks on the flywheel. With that open you point the timing light in there and adjust the distributor while the engine is running. I use a welders chalk to mark the correct timing mark so it is easier to see.

Run on) do you mean continues to run after the ignition switch has been turned off... If so its idled to high are running to hot... Its possible the timing is causing it to run to hot it will not hurt to check but normally timing is not the issue...

I noticed that the electronic unit works well with a wide variation in timing. As a result I set mine (several) by the old shade tree
mechanic method: Loosen the dist. Rotate cw till it misfires, marking position, rotate back ccw till it misfires, again marking the
position, set it in the middle, tighten dist.

Too fast an idle, or carbon buildup in the cylinders could cause overruning too as mentioned. I think carbon is your culprit as you said
"every once in awhile" and carbon is a variable, the rest are fixed values. Get something like Sea Foam (most auto parts stores carry it)
and add it to your gas for awhile. It gets rid of the carbon as do other "snake oil" treatments, like water injection for one.

Actually on mine I don't remember at what rpm I set them. Just that they pulled just fine afterwards with no ill effects. Understand your comment about mechanical spark advance and all.
