Changing canister oil filter to spin on

4000, 3 cyl. diesel. I bought a kit to change the canister oil filter to spin on about a year ago from a guy in Alabama on e-bay. Got around to putting it on yesterday. I realized the gasket wasn't the exact same size but it fit the cast cap and it seemed to fit OK into the block. Can you guess the results? I had oil squirting out of it, not quite sure where, I was on the seat starting it, but I think out of the bottom of cast cap. Took it off and replaced the old canister.....no leaks.

Any ideas if I can make this thing work? Or, do I try to get in touch with the e-bay guy. Are there more than one size recess in the blocks of those 3 cyl?

How low on the motor block is the oil filter located? If low like my old TO35 Ferguson, in the woods I have had a limb swing up and hit the canister housing. If it had been a thin wall spin on filter I think it would have split the filter open, draining my oil.

My new Toyota van, they have gone back to using canister oil filter, do not know why.

I like the convenience of the spin on oil filter, but guess after all these years, 1957 model, I will just stay with the canister filter.

IIRC, I bought one off of Ebay once, didn't have the big gasket with it, re-used the old canister filter gasket.

Maybe that will seal better.

I've changed 3 tractors (4000, 5000) to spin on, sure don't miss those canisters.

On my '65 3000 the canister has a drain plug. If, the last time you installed it, you put it on the bottom, you can drain the oil before removing and makes the job a lot cleaner. I like the extra filtration since I don't change the oil till it gets dirty. My Ford dealer used to stock the filters but no longer. Get them off the www. Company that makes them is Bxxxx froget the rest.
