861 oil leak at starter button.

My 861 is leaking transmission oil at the starter button. Do I have a venting problem or does the starter button need to be removed and sealed.
 
Most likely you have a damaged hydraulic pressure line in the transmission, either freeze damage or corrosion perforation.

This allows the hydraulic pump to overfill the transmission sump with oil from the hydraulic sump.

Check the level of the hydraylic sump and the transmission sump.

What do you mean "half full?" There is a level plug to check the oil level in the transmission. The level plug is on the right side near the foot board. Oil will be thrown from the starter button if you have filled the transmission oil level to high or if the hydraulic pump has pumped excessive oil into the transmission from the hydraulic sump through a damaged oil line inside of the transmission.

What do you mean by OK? There is a dip stick to check the oil level in the hydraulic sump.

I don't have the time to check the trans level today but I changed the hyd. fluid the other day and it is holding the proper
level. I thank you for the info and I'll check the trans fluid this weekend.

There is a little seal under the starter button.
If it is missing it might "weep" there from the splashing oil.
Same as the top cover will do if not sealed.
So I guess my question is, is it weeping or a pressurized leak?
 
The trans. oil is weeping out so I will need to check it out for the seal. Royce, I will stop in some weekend this summer to
check out your Fords. Larry
 
Sounds good Larry. I'm around most weekends.
That seal is just a little fiber or plastic flat washer.
Nothing fancy. I hope that's the cause.
Cheap and fairly easy as long as the shifter handle comes off Ok.

They are not air tight.... The shifter is not the vent..
The top shaft in the trans has no seal at the rear excess fluid would leak back into the hydraulic sump if it over filled as long as the hyd. sump had enough fluid to keep the cycle going...

The lift cover has no seals at the lift arms are draft plunger that's you vent for the system...

The 5 speed is very open. let's lots of air in or out. The four speed is not loose but it is not any tighter than the rock shaft.

The 5 speed is very open. let's lots of air in or out. The four speed is not loose but it is not any tighter than the rock shaft.

Yes, I did forget the 5sp shifter is a different animal...
