AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEM

On my 8830 Ford the AC is not working. I had it looked at by a man with some air-conditioning knowledge but he could not get it to work. The problem is there is no electric power to the clutch on the compressor. Is there a way to tell if the problem is with the ac temp control or perhaps the fan switch. If anyone knows how to solve this problem I would appreciate their help.

I'm betting there is a pressure switch somewhere that cuts out the compressor voltage when the refrigerant runs too low.

As mentioned, a switch will interrupt power to the clutch.

The problem, however, is that a loss of refrigerant in the system
will not allow the pressure switch to close.

If the system sat idle over the winter, the chances a a small leak
losing the charge are good.

You MIGHT get a very small action of the clutch after setting
for a while, but you'll get nothing if the system is empty.

So, for the moment, could be loss of refrig, could be electrical,
but I'd suspect empty system.

If it has a low pressure switch, you can simply add a can of freon and then the switch will kick in and the compressor will start running. should be obvious by the pressure in the system at rest.

Or, you could just take a paperclip, bend it into a "U" shape, unplug the pressure switch and jumper it with the paper clip. If you then have voltage to the compressor clutch, you have either a system empty of freon or a faulty switch. The smart money is on the system having a leak and no freon. Do not run the compressor without freon in the system, simply check for voltage.
