5200 tranny swap

I have a parts 5200 with the 8 speed tranny. A friend has a ford 5000 with a bad SOS that he want to swap out for an 8 spd tranny. Will the 8 spd in my 5200 work in his regular 5000 tractor? Both are diesel. Thank you for your knowledge

I'm not as familiar with the 5000s.
On the 4000s you would change from the flywheel back.
Then it is an easy swap.
I suspect the 5000 is the same.

It should... there is less complication involved with a 5000 because the PTO is the same in the rear axle on both models. Change the flywheel and you should be good to go... I think.

Differential gears are different ratios between the 8 speed and the S-O-S on the 5000 series.

The 8 speed 5000 had 5.28:1 rear gear ratio and the S-O-S had 6.67:1, which ends up as more than a 25% reduction in speed.

They did make a 6.166:1 rear for the 8 speed for Germany, specifically to lower the top speed to make it legal on the road over there.

If your numbers are correct, then it seems to me, he would get an increase in speed, unless you mean slower engine rpms for same ground speed.

I was thinking he would swap out the entire tranny and rear end together.
I doubt the ratios are different between a 5000 and 5200.
The photo is of a 4000 but this plus the flywheel and clutch is what he wants.

Nope! Sean is correct! The closer the numbers in a gear ratio, the faster the driven gear will move.

The ratio, like 5.28:1 means that the input has to turn 5.28 times for the output to turn once. So increasing the first number so the ratio is to 6.67:1 means that you would have to increase the input speed to get the same output speed, or if you keep the input speed the same you will have a slower the output speed.

Yeah, but. He's going the other way.

He's putting an 8 speed transmission, which was designed to be used with a 5.28:1 ratio rear, into a tractor that originally had an S-O-S, so the rear there has a 6.67:1 ratio.
