Hey guys Im going to split my 861 in the next
couple of weeks to change the flywheel starter ring
gear, rear main seal and possibly the input shaft
seal on the tranny. I'm going to get the ring gear
from this site but I need some input on the rear
main and input shaft seal. I know this has been
discussed before but can't remember what the
different opinions were. Thanks

I wont say much about the rear main seal except I don't think much of Ford's engineering there.
You will need to drop the pan to do it so order a new pan gaasket.
The tranny input seals aren't hard to do. You have to remove the front bearing housing and that entails removing the clutch fork and cross shaft.
But none of that is difficult either.
Remember if you have an 861 you will have dual input shafts for the live PTO.
So you will need two seals, not one.
The spring side of the seal goes to the oil.
Remember to buy new Orings for the manifold on your hydraulic pump too.

Get a gasket for the cover on the hydraulic pump drive gear on the end of the camshaft too. You'll be right there and it doesn't cost much. Chased a leak for awhile on ours to find out it was that cover gasket. Now any time I split one I replace that gasket.

Are you planning on dropping the crank to replace the rear main? Some have luck with replacing the seal with the crank in place, some do not. I tried twice with the crank in place without luck and ended up dropping the crank to replace the rear main seal. I did use the Victor Reinz RTV type sealant in place of the original wedge seals for the sides of the rear main cap and a two piece neoprene for the rear journal. I ended up doing a full engine rebuild once I had my engine torn down. I found the "FOMOCO" logo on the crank main bearings.

2X what Mitchford says. I did the rear main on my 961 a few years ago the two piece neoprene wasn't bad but the two side wedges were tough. The silicone Victor has to be much better. A couple more tips: be sure that it is level fron to back before separating. Tough pushing back together if hey are not on the same plane. Get you a trailer jack and attach it to the side of the rear housing via a bracket like Hobo showed us. quick easy and safe. block the front roll the rear. the large tires roll more easily and give you mechanical advantage to push.
