The Ford 2110 that we are using on the hunting property has developed an issue.

It is leaking from the center bolt where the bell housing meeting the trans housing. This has started recently and when trying to tighten the bolt the housing appears to be stripped.

We took the bolt out and the bolt is not stripped. We added some red rtv to slow down the leak.

My question is this can this housing be drilled and tapped to use a slightly larger bolt or would a heli coil work better. I have tried to use a heli coil if anyone could tell me how they work is this is a possible solution.

The PO added a Kelly frame mounted backhoe attachment. Could this have stripped out the housing as I am thinking that this is creating to much stress on the tractor?

Thanks in advance

I am not sure about your stripped bolt/ leak, but heli-coils work by over drilling the stripped hole and using the special tap for the size heli-coil
you are using, tap the oversize hole and insert the diamond wire coil with the special tool. Now the hole has been re threaded back to the
original size. Most common heli-coils ( and other like brands) are available at auto stores or on line. Unless you are doing that kind of repair
often, just get the size kit you need. Usually the correct drill bit, tap, insert tool and about 5 coils are included in the kits.

You won't repair the leak unless you split the tractor. The threads will stretch out of the housing and interfere with the mating surfaces of the two housings. You need to use a drill bit larger than the holes and cut the stretched threads back. While it is split you can install a hell-coil in the stripped hole. Use a good quality gasket eliminator to reseal the housings.

Took the bolt out where the tranny fluid had been leaking.

Found that someone in the tractors past had put in a metric bolt with some type of red had goop on it to prevent the leaking.

It need a 1/2 inch bolt. Used the FEL to jack the front of tractor up pretty high the we took a 1/2 tap to clean the threads back up and installed the correct 1/2 bolt with some RTV around the head and tightened with up good.

Let it set for about 2 hours. Lowered the tractors back down. Poured in about 3-3.5 gallons of ATF and gave it a quick test run. Parked on level spot added more ATF until showed full on dipstick and re-test drive.

No leak and dipstick still shows full. Will have to wait until we have the opportunity to get her up to normal operating temp to know for certain.

We are pulling the backhoe unit off and re-installing the 3 point for brush hog work. Will try to get a follow up in a couple of weeks. Will be helping out at VBS this week so not going to have anytime to do more until next weekend.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

ATF was all we could get our hands on at time. Ran it very little on the ATF. Planning a complete change of trans, Hyd and other fluids.

Will use UTF when changing.

We removed the bolt where the trans was leaking, Found the bolt was to small. Re-tapped the threads to clean them up and installed correct 1/2 inch bolt. Drained trans/hyd fluid, replaced filter and re-filled. No more leak.

After using anther area started leaking and tightened bolts in that area and no more major leaks other than a few drips per day that are not unusual on older tractors.

While we were at it we changed the fuel filter as well as oil and oil filter.
