Exhaust with 12 volt swap

I just bought a 860 and a 640- both have been converted to 12 volt and both have a vertical exhaust stack. Is this a requirement for swapping an alternator in?

I'd like to swap back to the standard exhaust that runs under the tractor if possible

EVERY 800/801/600/601 series tractor I have EVER seen had the vertical exhaust and in most condition it is better due to fire hazards. Has nothing to do with 6 or 12 volts by the way

My 640 has been running on 12 volts for years with an under exhaust, just change to a vertical exhaust last week. With
under exhaust the alternator pulley is close to the pipe but no closer than the original 6 volt genny. As others have
said, no problem changing back.

I expect that they all get changed over to vertical to save time and $. I want to change my restored 901 back to under to make it sound like the 801 that I drove as a kid.

It's funny, I set my 641 up with a vertical to sound like the 860 I drove when I was younger.

I just thought maybe there was a clearance issue with the alternator possibly. didn't want to spend the coin for a stock exhaust if there was. who knows maybe the guy just really like stacks!

ok so to swap back to the horizontal exhaust, Its two pieces correct?

this site lists them as
1- exhaust pipe, curved
2- exhaust pipe, horizontal

or they have the neat side discharge short pipe stubbed 4" off the muffler aiming out left front at 45' angle down.. :)

Either exhaust system will work with an alternator.

When you swap back to horizontal system, do yourself a favor and buy an exhaust pipe intended for your tractor rather than having a muffler shop bend one for you. The OEM design is flatened in the area of the generator pulley to provide clearance.

good to know thanks.

I wonder if TSC carries the exhaust for the 600 and 800 series?

Sounds and smells are what really bring memories back.

Yep, daughter wanted to rake hay, put her on a 64 4000 with horizontal exhaust.

She managed to get a big pile at the end of a windrow, tried to drive over the top...you can guess the rest.

She got off, I got the fire out before anything got hurt, but she learned something that day.
