ford 4000 diesel

Ya I don't have that. Someone was saying a 5 speed will bolt up just have to change the flywheel and clutch. Suppose the input shaft too. Does that sound right?

That looks like a reas deal!

The late model S-O-S transmissions were just about bullet proof with even irregular maintenance.

Could be the traction disconnect.

Does the PTO work? If not look to the input shaft and/or torque limiting clutch.

It may be cost prohibitive to repair if it needs a new input shaft. If so, swap it with an 8X2 from a parts tractor.

I think the ask is a bit much on this one unless you know what the problem is and what it will cost to fix... There's no easy way to swap transmissions on a 4000. Basically you just swap the back half of the tractor out. The complication is that an 8 speed 4000 has the PTO contained in the rear axle center housing wheras this bugger has the PTO in the transmission... and IIRC, the rear axle crown and pinion are different in the SOS tractor... so by the time you buy all this stuff, even at salvage prices... you may as well just buy another 8 speed tractor with a bad engine. Only way I'd buy this damn thing is if I was sure it could be fixed with a torque limiter.

True, but he could get more than his asking price for the tractor just parting out a few things on it, like those spin out rear wheels and weights plus the running diesel engine.

It very well could be the traction disconnect. SOS don't roll well even in neutral. The traction arm could have been flipped and forgotten about, or even done by a PO.

As for parts. They can be found, and not too hard, there are lots of parts places that have complete transmissions for 50-150, all in 'unknown' condition because they just parted the tractors and/or swapped the trans.

You will either love or hate the SOS, there is no middle ground.

Properly maintained and adjusted they are pretty slick, 10 speeds, shift on the fly, creeper, park...

Its not as easy to work on as a manual transmission, but if you follow the steps outlined in the book, its not overly complicated either.

I went and bought a cheap parts transmission for mine, in case I ever need an input shaft or other parts, picked it up for 50, and it sits in the corner of the barn. Next winter I plan to open it up, and see about rebuilding it just in case I ever need it.

I wouldn't let an SOS scare me away from a tractor, just like I wouldn't let a Hydrostat scare me off of a tractor... they used them right up to the next best thing... and the newer the trans the better designed it was.

My other half was still talking about it this morning...even talking about people who could fix it...I tried to not hear him. Who knows maybe we'll buy it. I'll post back if we do.

It's gone. I was trying to talk my cousin in to buying it. He could have used the rear tires for one of his tractors, I would have bought the engine for Luke's 4000, and the wheel weights for one of my tractors.

Anyone know who bought it? If it gets parted, I'd like to know.
